I am posting this today on International Women's Day.
This year I have had the pleasure of taking part in a project from A-Space Arts to celebrate the event at God's House Tower. The call was to paint a piece inspired by the female artist that has inspired you the most as a female creative. My chosen artist is Georgia O'Keeffe, whose work I discovered as a child. I loved her boldness of shape but delicate handling of colour; her paint application and depth made me want to be a painter myself. I chose to paint the Amaryllis, a symbol of strength, determination and beauty. The enormous stems grow with vigour and statuesque beauty. Like Georgia O'Keeffe, I maximised the size and following it's feminine curves and lines, painted deep crimson petals in detail. O’Keeffe worked in a male-dominated world and was repeatedly reminded of her gender and otherness as she moved through the art world. Her flower paintings remind us of both strength and beauty. The exhibition joins together the work of over 100 female artists from around the world with an opportunity to purchase any of the 100 pieces in a silent auction raising money for the brilliant @yellowdoorsol that helps prevent and respond to domestic and sexual abuse. It has been such a wonderful experience to visit the exhibition with all the other women celebrating women through our creativity. Incidentally one of my ancestors was a priest at God's House Tower and the place has an absolutely awesome museum and cafe which is well worth a visit!!
