Voices of Tipner
A Wild Land Under Threat
Proposals in Portsmouth to build 3,500 houses will ‘reclaim’ and concrete over 67 acres of protected intertidal habitat and 7 acres of protected land. If these plans go ahead, they will set a dangerous precedent for building over protected habitats nationwide.
This exhibition aims to highlight the voices of the wildlife that already call Tipner home.

Why is Tipner West so important?
Tipner West in Portsmouth UK is a unique and highly protected environment of intertidal mudflats, shingle shore and wild heathland home to a plethora of important species. Sadly, it is worryingly under threat from developers planning to concrete the delicate mudflats and build a Super Peninsula. If they are successful, it will be the first time land with this level of protection has lost its fight with developers in the UK, setting a potential precedent for future wild lands to be lost.
This exhibition aims to show the beauty contained within the wild urban escape. Not only do I see it as my job as an artist to creatively demonstrate the beauty we should all be striving to protect but also the opportunity there is here to create a space where nature can flourish further and locals can feel a connection to the wild.
Tipner has been a pleasure to work with; it’s history, wildlife and tranquillity captured my imagination. The views and wildlife have inspired me each time I visit and it is my hope that the spirit of Tipner West has poured into the images.
My aim for this exhibition was to highlight the importance and beauty of the land, telling stories and building relationships between decision makers and the environments they make decisions over. Development will always be inevitable, people need homes. However, it is my belief that we should make it sensitive to the wildlife that is already calling it home as a priority. This exhibition sets out to give voice to the wildlife of Tipner, the place they call home.

How the images were created
My process is to sensitively collect plant materials, seaweed and water from the site before taking my paper through an environmentally friendly dye process, allowing the plants to release their unique colours and patterns into the paper. I then spend my time observing the marks on the paper and researching the area so that I can create something truly of the land itself. The artworks here are quite literally made from Tipner West.
